If I don’t like a band, the reason is probably that the singer’s voice is annoying. That’s the case for all of the above except U2.
With most of the bands above (again, except U2, and also Rush), the singer just sounds bored. I think that might be an alternative rock thing. There are some alternative rock songs I like though, but in general, if you sound bored, I don’t want to listen to you.
I don’t actually know why I dislike U2; I just do.
R.E.M. gets extra dislike because of the whole Monkees and the Rock Hall thing.
The Tragically Hip gets less dislike because their name comes from Mike Nesmith.
Rush hate is genetically programmed into me. Funny story.
There is a certain brand of country music that frustrates the hell out of me, but I can’t remember what it is. I used to think it was really old country, then I thought it was ’90s pop country, but I like some of both of those, so I don’t know what it is. It’s possible Mike Nesmith made some of that hate go away.
