6×16 “Eternal Flame/A Date with Burt”

  • Date Watched: July 29, 2021
  • Rating: 3 out of 5

A newlywed couple wants to find the fountain of youth so they can be together forever.
Sandra Dee wants a date with James Bond.

Tattoo: That lady looks kind of shy, boss.

I feel like Tattoo describes people as “shy” a lot, but I feel like you generally can’t tell that just from seeing someone step out of a plane.

Roarke: There is an island to the south of here, very remote.

How remote could it possibly be with all the islands around Fantasy Island?

Roarke: But I must warn you, it could be very… very dangerous.

Roarke: What concerns me, Miss Winslow, is that you seem to have substituted the illusion of films for the reality of real life.

Burt Hunter is watching one of his movies on TV. It’s the same show that Shakespeare watched in 6×12 “Room and Bard”.

I feel like I should have watched The Man with the Golden Gun before seeing this episode.

This is a different menu from the one seen in 5×13 “Shadow Games”.

I don’t like the cover.

Christy: You know I never eat junk food, but today I had this incredible craving for chocolate sundaes.
Roarke: Two of them?

Tattoo: Oh, that’s Burt Hunter. He’s a famous movie star. He’s also my best friend.
Roarke: He is? Really?

Watch out, Tattoo; Roarke’s gonna get jealous and vote you off the island again.

Tattoo takes Christy over to Burt Hunter so she can get his autograph, and Roarke looks genuinely confused, which doesn’t happen often.

Christy: The chef is just crazy about Simon Flynn movies; I bet I can trade this for a month of sundaes!

Aw, Tattoo’s plan backfired. But we learned something about Wally! Or maybe Henri. Let’s say Wally though.

Margaret’s fantasy was to hang out with an actor, Burt Hunter, who plays a James Bond type character. The studio thinks he’s getting too old, and they want to replace him. Burt buys Margaret an outfit, kisses her, takes her to dinner, and hangs out with her all weekend. Burt hires a stuntman and stages a fight between him and the stuntman so he can impress the director. The director knows it’s a stunt though, and Margaret feels used. But like there’s no way this guy just came to Fantasy Island to spent the weekend with her out of the goodness of his heart. If it’s not a publicity stunt, then he’s at least getting paid for it.

Oooh the golden Grecian goblet does guarantee a grave this time, because it’s poisoned! (And… a little rare.)

Christy: Mr. Roarke always says “beautiful things make beautiful feeling happen”.

Mm, I don’t think he always says that.

Christy: I hope it’s okay to give flowers to a guy.
Roarke: I’d say it’s immensely okay.

“Immensely okay”? lol.

There’s a night scene at 41 minutes into the episode. I don’t remember any earlier night scenes, so I guess my theory about one night scene halfway through the episode was wrong.

wut.

I really hope they keep ending episodes with Roarke’s stupid face.

Roarke: Remember, a poet once said “grow old with me; the best is yet to be”.

Huh, so I guess John Lennon didn’t actually come up with those lines. Also, it seems a bit ironic for Roarke to say that; I mean, we’ve never had confirmation that he doesn’t age, but he must not, right?

Well, I mean, we do know he can time travel, so it’s possible he does age like a normal human, and he only knows Elizabeth Bathory and Alexander the Great and all whoever because he’s spent his life leaping through time. Except, no — we do know he is at least a few hundred years old, because he’s known Helen of Troy at least that long, according to 4×24 “Technical Advisor”, and he does not look a few hundred years old. So no, Roarke does not age like a normal human.

  • Guests:
    • Mr. Alex Weston, an architect; and his wife Mrs. Diana Weston, an interior decorator; both from Phoenix, Arizona
    • Miss Margaret Winslow, a file clerk from Salem, Oregon
  • Ominous Roarke:
    • Roarke: They hope to discover the secret of eternal youth, so they can be together for all time. If they succeed, it could mean exactly the opposite.
    • Tattoo: Boss, can I meet him? I’m a big fan of his.
Roarke: In due time, Tattoo. This is Miss Winslow’s fantasy, remember? A fantasy which may take some rather unexpected turns…
  • Roarke’s drink: same old — although, actually, it looks clearer than it usually is
  • Ominous shot of Roarke drinking: no, he looks at Tattoo and smiles, which doesn’t make sense. He used to only look at Tattoo when Tattoo said or did something particularly weird or dumb, but now, Roarke seems to just look at him for no reason
  • Warnings:
    • Roarke: I caution you. Cherish what you have. Don’t risk it for something that’s probably a mere myth.

  • Disguise: Roarke wears some Egyptian costume to the Westons’ fantasy.
  • Hypnosis:
    • Roarke: The queen has been using the jewel in her necklace to hypnotize you. Now try to remember, Mr. Weston. Remember Diana… and the great love between you… remember before it’s too late.
  • Disappearing act:
    • Alex Weston: Well, what happened to her? Where is she? Mr. Roarke, help me… Mr. Roarke?
