5×01 “Show Me a Hero…/Slamdunk”

  • Date Watched: June 10, 2021
  • Rating: 2; 3 out of 5

Connie Stevens wants to find out what happened to her old boyfriend, David Hedison.
5’5″ Sonny Bono wants to be a basketball player so Jenilee Harrison will fall in love with him.

Interesting — they’ve got Julie in the opening credits right from the start of season 5, even before they’ve introduced her.

Waaaah, and season 5 means we get shenanigans again. 😭

Roarke: And where is my favourite goddaughter off to this morning?

This line would have been totally fine… had we not just met Delphine. Not cool to play favourites like that, Roarke. (Even though he’s correct and Julie is 100% better than Delphine.)

Ahhh! And it’s not fake widescreen any more! Yaaaas!

Ohh, Wally is driving them from the house now! Wow!

(Yes, I acknowledge that I am getting way too excited over completely meaningless things.)

Ahh, this set is so different!

Aww! I love that they’re acknowledging the addition of Tattoo’s podium.

Okay, I know I just said recently that I liked how in later seasons, they had a different shot of the dancing girls every week… but this is gonna be a pain in the butt to track.

I don’t really dig the new dancing girl music. It doesn’t seem familiar to me at all, so I think they not stick with this music for very long.

Oh, come on, really? They didn’t change Roarke’s drink this season? Boooo!

When I saw the first shot of the office, I thought it looked a bit different, especially around the floor by the patio door. But comparing to a similar shot from last season, everything is so very the same, even down to things being placed in the exact same location on Roarke’s desk. It seems like the camera was further back, but I think it’s just the fact that that bottom of the screen isn’t cut off now, and I get to see more of the actual shot as intended.

Roarke: Oh, I do understand your emotions, Miss Ross, but I must warn you that time does not stand still for any of us.

It’s been a long time since we got a full-on “but I must warn you”.

Tattoo: When it comes to love, attitude is much more important than altitude.

Opening scene shenanigans, a “but I must warn you”, and a magic object? Season 5 is off to a good start, boys.

Sonny Bono’s fantasy is completely useless; he wants to be a basketball star, because he thinks that’s the only way to impress the girl he likes. But I have a feeling that in the end, she’s going to tell him she doesn’t care whether he’s any good at basketball or not. He probably could have saved a lot of money by just talking to her.

Oh my god. Is this supposed to be Fantasy Island? Hmm, nah, I think this is probably meant to be the neighbouring island where John Day lives. Oh well.

The basketball court is set up outside the village set, and in one shot, Ginger walks off the court, and you can see the lagoon/waterfall set in the background. I didn’t realize those sets were so close together. One day, I will be able to piece together the layout of Columbia Ranch circa 1981.

Waah, I love it when sets are painted white and red.

Sky: You’re not gonna ask me how the weather is up here?
Tattoo: No. Not if you don’t ask me how it is to look at kneecaps all day long.
Sky: I guess we kind of have the same problem, only in reverse, don’t we?
Tattoo: We don’t have a problem; if people cannot see us the way we really are, well, they’re the one with the problem.

Theodore Kingman: I have the feeling you’re trying to tell me something, and I’m missing it… that I don’t understand.

This is me in English class.

Matt Kane: I’ve been a fool.

Ginger: Matt, don’t you know that’s all I ever wanted to hear? Not about basketball and height and all that stuff. Just that you needed me, that you wanted me.

Roarke: He’s serving a life sentence with no chance of parole.
Theodore Kingman: But he’s here. How can that be?
Roarke: I have certain influence… Mr. Kingman.

“These are not the droids you are looking for” kind of influence.

I’m kind of torn on the ending of “Show Me a Hero”. It’s not really cool that Roarke and John put on an act so that Helen wouldn’t love John any more, but also, I get that they’re doing it for a good reason.

  • Julie’s outfit: skirt
  • Where’s Julie?
    • Julie: A whole week of my summer has gone by here with you, and…
      Roarke: Yes?
Julie: Well, I was wondering if I could start going with you to the plane dock to help you welcome the guests.
Roarke: Oh, I see. Well, actually, that is a distinct possibility, Julie, but not quite yet. When you’ve had a little more seasoning, yes, of course. However, I do need your invaluable assistance in organizing the children’s party for this afternoon.
Julie: Oh, I would love it, Mr. Roarke!
  • Drivers:

Tattoo: Boss, can we do it?
  • Ominous Roarke:
    • Roarke: But Mr. Kane may learn a cruel reality, Tattoo… that love can be won and lost in the very same moment…
  • Roarke’s drink: same old :(
  • Ominous shot of Roarke drinking: mmm, he starts to be ominous, and then he stops
  • Recurring phrases:
    • Roarke: Oh, I do understand your emotions, Miss Ross, but I must warn you that time does not stand still for any of us.
    • Roarke: You have found that there have indeed been changes, huh?
    • Roarke: Then you must indeed talk to him.
    • Tattoo: You know boss, once in a while, it’s very nice to find out what a big man I am.

      Matt Kane: They feel strange.
Roarke: They are a… device… to assist you in fulfilling your fantasy, Mr. Kane.
  • All you need is love:
    • Roarke: But please remember that no device can assure love or happiness. For such precious commodities, each of us must look inwardly.
    • Tattoo: Boss, Miss Ross will never know the truth about Captain Day, will she, boss?
Roarke: No, no, Tattoo. Except a very special kind of truth, perhaps, a truth that gives without taking. A truth that will bless every remaining day of her life.
Tattoo: That sound more like love to me.
  • Artist Tattoo: He is painting a portrait of “Skyhook” Schuyler.
