5×22 “The Ghost’s Story/The Spoilers”

  • Date Watched: July 9, 2021
  • Rating: 3; 1 out of 5

Midge Pinciotti wants to stay in a house haunted by Dack Rambo to make a name for herself as an occult expert.
A bounty hunter wants to catch a guy.

Roarke: This is a picture of Blackmoor Manor itself.

Boy, all the mansions on Fantasy Island seem to look like that.

Roarke: Miss Parsons, I sympathize with your personal problem, but I can’t play favourites among fantasizers.

I don’t think guests have ever been called “fantasizers” before.

Roarke: You will note on this map that, um, the island to which I am sending you is the most remote one of this archipelago.

I don’t think anyone has ever called this an archipelago either — but it clearly is, what with how many neighbouring islands there are.

This looks like it could be a real map, rather than one just made for the show, but it doesn’t look like Hawaii.

[Roarke and the guests arrive at Blackmoor Manor. A man in a bright red tracksuit jogs over to them.]
Mr. Ross: That’s a gloomy pile of rocks, Mr. Roarke.
Roarke: Yes, it has been called that by certain people, Mr. Ross.
[Mr. Ross jogs away.]

lol, that was random. I hope this guy doesn’t show up again and this encounter goes completely unexplained.

Nick Tanner: How’d you find me?
Harry Bodine:
It was the bacon, Nick; smell carries a long way.
Nick Tanner:
Across five thousand miles of ocean?

Earlier, Harry mentioned that he almost caught Nick in Georgia. The distance between Georgia and Hawaii is about 4,500 miles — but maybe only half of that is ocean.

[Reading the plaque on a portrait inside Blackmoor Manor.]
Amanda Parsons:
Captain Fitzhugh Ross… he looks familiar.

Ah, I guess the jogger does show up again, boo.

The ghost effects are pretty cheesy, and Tanya Roberts’ mouth does not at all match the screaming that’s going on.

I thought this was going to be a new episode for me, because the title didn’t sound familiar, but I definitely do remember seeing the ghost story before; I don’t remember the other story though, probably because I didn’t pay attention to it before, just like I’m not paying attention to it now.

Amanda Parsons: You’re the ghost of Blackmoor Manor?
Roarke: Unfortunately, he is.

This is sort of unsatisfying, like 5×14 “The Whistle”; she’s not really accomplishing anything by staying in this manor, because Roarke knows that the ghost is harmless, and Roarke could very well have stayed in the manor and claimed the prize money. Although, I’m not actually sure who’s offering the prize money — maybe it’s Roarke himself.

Oh, this is sad — they painted over the red so it wouldn’t look like they were still on Fantasy Island.

[About Mr. Ross, who happens to look just like Fitzhugh Ross, who challenged Captain Black to a duel some hundred years ago.]
Amanda Parsons:
Mr. Roarke, isn’t, uh, that man being here a rather large coincidence?
Roarke: Are you suggesting that I arranged a way for you to possibly solve Captain Black’s eternal problem?
Amanda Parsons: That’s exactly what I’m suggesting.
Roarke: Oh. Well, I… I see your reasoning… but of course, you are wrong to suspect me. Even if it would make the best possible ending for that book you mentioned writing — the stuff of which best sellers are made. However, it wasn’t part of your fantasy to help the ghost, was it?

Finally, someone calling Mr. Roarke out on these obvious coincidences.

Hang on, whoa. What building is this, right across from the bungalow? We never actually see this building and the bungalow in the same shot, so it’s possible they filmed the scene in two different locations though.

I feel like we’ve seen this dress before, but I’m not tracking dresses.

The music in the scene where Timothy reunites with his father starts out like it’s gonna be a baroque-y version of the Fantasy Island theme, but that’s only for the first four notes, and then it turns into something else. Didn’t they used to do variations on the theme a lot in season one? Or maybe that was season seven? Anyway, I like when they do that.

It’s weird that in the “Spoilers” fantasy, the guy with the fantasy doesn’t get the love interest, but the guy he was chasing does.

Oh, weird. We’re actually seeing Roarke conducting a wedding for once; I think that might be a first.

Wow! There are no dancing girls at the end of the episode. That’s a first for this season. But, it’s the end of the season, so it’s time to do my first act dancing girls wrap-up:

  • It appears that the full sequence of the dance goes: to the left, to the right, dip to the left, dip to the right, spin around, raise arms, and shake
  • 5×10 shows to the left, to the right, dip to the left, dip to the right
  • 5×1, 5×6, 5×11, 5×12, 5×19 and 5×22 show to the left, to the right (and sometimes the beginning of dip to the left)
  • 5×2 shows to the right, dip to the left
  • 5×4 and 5×9 shows to the right, dip to the left, dip to the right
  • 5×14 and 5×18 show dip to the left, dip to the right
  • 5×21 shows dip to the right, spin around, and raise arms
  • 5×3 and 5×13 show spin around, raise arms, and shake
  • 5×7, 5×8, 5×16, and 5×17 show a wide shot that includes Roarke and Tattoo from the back
  • 5×20 shows a wide shot that include Roarke and Julie from the back
  • 5×5 and 5×15 show a shot that doesn’t appear to fit into the main sequence; three of the girls walk towards the camera while the other three walk away, then they all spin around, then they each walk in the opposite direction

The shot of the dancing girls at the end of the episodes use a different sequence, but I don’t really wanna do that right now.

  • Julie’s outfit: skirt
  • Where’s Julie?
    • Roarke: Have you seen Julie?
Tattoo: Well, she’s having a problem with Mr. Austin’s fantasy.
Roarke: Ah yes, as I recall, Mr. Austin’s fantasy was to become invisible. Yes.
      Tattoo: Mm-hm.
[Tattoo sees a pair of legs walking around.]
Tattoo: Boss, is it possible to have half a fantasy?
      Roarke: What do you mean?
[Roarke sees a pair of legs walking around.]
Roarke: I suppose that is Mr. Austin. Yes, it would appear Julie is having a little problem.
      Tatttoo: Half a problem.
      Roarke: Half a prob–
      [Roarke shakes his head.]
  • Drivers:
    • To the dock: Wally
    • To Blackmoor Manor: Wally, That Guy
    • Amanda Parsons’ departure: Wally
  • Guests:
    • Miss Amanda Parsons, a secretary from Baltimore Maryland
    • Mr. Harry Bodine, a bounty hunter
  • Locations:
    • Blackmoor Manor
  • Roarke’s drink: same old
  • Ominous shot of Roarke drinking: not really
  • Someone else had a fantasy:
    • Professor Ballentine: What’s happening here, Mr. Roarke?
Roarke: It’s very simple. All three of you have asked for the same fantasy.
  • Can’t help you:
    • Amanda Parsons: Won’t you please send them away?
Roarke: Miss Parsons, I sympathize with your personal problem, but I can’t play favourites among fantasizers. I couldn’t possibly do what you ask. I’m terribly sorry.
  • Location recreation:
    • Roarke: I imagine you all know the history of Blackmoor Manor. It was purchased on the Welsh coast by an eccentric millionaire, and then transported here to Fantasy Island where it was precisely reconstructed, stone by stone, literally.
  • Neighbouring islands:
    • Roarke: You will note on this map that um the island to which I am sending you is the most remote one of this archipelago.
  • Last chance:
    • Roarke: You stand before Blackmoor Manor. This is your last chance to change your mind.
  • Magic fog: It may not be magic, but fog appears when the driver drives onto the Blackmoor Manor property.
  • Recurring phrases:
    • Timothy Black: Please don’t kill me.
Amanda Parsons: Kill you? You’re already a ghost.
Roarke: Indeed he is, Miss Parsons.
    • Roarke: Well, Miss Parsons, it would seem that uh, your fantasy is over, and completely successful. You have won the prize by staying the required time in Blackmoor Manor.
    • Amanda Parsons: Well, I guess my fantasy really is over now.
    • Harry Bodine: Just look at Nick. He got a life sentence after all.
Roarke: Yes, indeed, and I have a feeling he’s going to enjoy every second of it.
  • Not what you asked for:
    • Roarke: Are you suggesting that I arranged a way for you to possibly solve Captain Black’s eternal problem?
Amanda Parsons: That’s exactly what I’m suggesting.
Roarke: Oh. Well, I… I see your reasoning… but of course, you are wrong to suspect me. Even if it would make the best possible ending for that book you mentioned writing… the stuff of which best sellers are made. However, it wasn’t part of your fantasy to help the ghost, was it?
  • A legal matter:
    • Roarke: By the power vested in me as chief magistrate of Fantasy Island, I now pronounce you man and wife.
  • Not leaving on the plane: Harry Bodine’s final scene is at Nick Tanner’s wedding rather than at the dock. There’s no mention of when he will be leaving, but I don’t think he has any reason to stay on the island.
  • Leaving with an extra guest:
    • Roarke: That reminds me, Miss Parsons; you will have a companion on your flight home.
      Amanda Parsons: Timothy!
Roarke: Yes, you see, his father really did love him, and since his curse deprived his son of his youth, the admiral asked me to make up for it by letting Timothy live out a normal life, hopefully falling in love and marrying.
  • Age gap:
    • Tanya Roberts: 32 / Dack Rambo: 40 = 8 years
    • Jo Ann Pflug: 42 / Robert Fuller: 48 = 6 years
