2×16 “Photographs/Royal Flush”

  • Rating: 3 out of 5

A woman wants to find out why a little girl keeps showing up in photographs she’s taken all over the world.
A man wants to win a poker game.

I don’t think I like that this episode shares a title with a Monkees episode.

Wow, so there’s a bungalow within view of the main house. Alright, this is good, we’re building out the area a little bit. Although I have no doubt there will be a conflicting shot at some point.

The IMDb thumbnail gave away to me last week time that Diana Muldaur would be in this.

Oh, I think I saw some of this episode before; I remember the “Photographs” bit.

Roarke has a buncha new stuff on his desk today.

Island Casino, lol. Waaaah, the casino is a re-dress of Roarke’s office! …this makes me uncomfortable.

And Wally’s dealing cards, ha ha. I want to know more about Wally. Do you think there will be a spin-off, and he will get to be chief bartender on a new island?

Oh my god! They showed the establishing shot of the casino again, and I realized it’s the side of the main house, with those weird stairs!

There’s not an “Island Casino” sign outside the main house, so I know we are not meant to assume the casino is actually upstairs, but at least we have a picture of the side of the house now. (But what I really need is a picture of the other side of the house.)

Huh, so the house has three storeys. And the stairs lead to the second story — which is good, because there’s not room for a door on the first floor, because that’s where the dresser is outside Roarke’s office. And three storeys is good, because then we’ve got more room for Roarke and Tattoo’s living space. But three storeys makes it match even less with the actual Queen Anne Cottage.

Is this the first time they’ve had a luau? I’m not sure. I don’t think that’s a thing that happens a lot anyway, but I think there have been at least a few luaus.

Ugh, why would you wear a necklace of a dead fish?

Hey, the waiter at the tiki restaurant is one of the other drivers. I think I might have suspected this before, but now, I am sure of it.

I think this is a new outdoor set. I don’t think we’ve seen it before, but I think they end up using it a lot.

I want to have a dramatic conversation with someone and walk away in the middle of it while continuing the conversation with my back to them.

Roarke: Mrs. Castle, the field of psychic phenomena commands respect in this day and age.

Whatever you say, boss.

Wow, wtf, she turned around, and Roarke was still there. Like, I know, that usually only happens when they’ve been taken back in time or to some weird location, so it wouldn’t make sense here, but I still sorta expected him to disappear.

Wait, she’s saying goodbye in Roarke’s office? Also weird.

Johnny Court: You know, I have more than enough cash to pay off your loan. Suppose you continue to manage your shop for the new owner. And…
Emily Holly: And what?
Johnny Court: …maybe think about someday marrying the boss.

Yeah, they’re using that same outdoor set when they wave goodbye — like you can see the fake backdrop in the background. Just checked the end of the last three episodes, and they didn’t use it there, so I think this is the first time we’ve had that.

So, at the end of the show, Tattoo tries to hypnotize Chester and have him “turn around and go back to the house”. Instead, Tattoo ends up hypnotizing himself; he spins around in a circle, and then walks forward, towards the dock. I am not going to take this to mean that’s the direction of the house, because Tattoo is bad at this.

However, we might assume the direction Chester came from is the direction of the house — otherwise, why would Tattoo specifically instruct him to turn around? However, I feel like in the beginning of the episodes, if we say the dock is north, then I feel like the car usually comes in from the east — and one would assume the car was coming from the main house — but Chester came from the west. Okay, so now I have to actually check which direction the car comes from:

  • 1×1: from the west, 1×2: from the west
  • 2×1: from the west
  • 3×1: from the east
  • 4×1: from the east
  • 5×1: from the east
  • 6×1: from the southwest
  • 7×1: from the east

Sooo… assuming they stay consistent within the seasons — which I’m sure they absolutely do not — then I feel like my hunch was correct. So if I’m making a map of the island, then I’m putting the main house to the east, roughly. I feel like this explains why, when I’ve dreamt I was on Fantasy Island, I had such a strong feeling the dock was thattaway. (Yes, my map of Fantasy Island is absolutely using my dreams as a source, because there’s such a lack of evidence in the actual show.) (Also, ew, why did I have to re-watch a S7 intro and be reminded of that terrible S7 car?)

(Well, actually, if I was making a map of the island, I think I’d actually put the dock to the south rather than the north; I just feel like the dock is at the southern tip of the island, but I don’t have any reason for thinking that. Actually, I think you’d have to look at the position of the main house set on the Columbia Ranch, because presumably, in at least one episode, you would be able to see the position of the sun, and you would also know approximately what time the scene is meant to take place, and so you would then know which way is east. And yes, in real life, the front of the house would have faced approximately south, assuming that Waltons map is correct, so… well, I guess that’s all I can determine from that; the main house faces south.)

Waah I hate when Roarke laughs way too hard at the end of the show. But also, here’s a somewhat relevant quote, in the words of that bad dude that shows up on Fantasy Island sometimes:

If she says she loves you
You can bet your boots she loves you
If she says she hates you
That can also mean she loves you
