3×05 “The Chain Gang/The Boss”

  • Rating: 1; 3 out of 5

Dennis Cole wants to hunt down some guy who killed his father or something.
A switchboard operator wants to be the boss… well, actually, she wants to date the boss.

Tattoo: Pitfall? You mean that nice lady can get in trouble?
Roarke: [doesn’t say anything]

Tattoo: Kill him? Did you say kill him, boss?
Roarke: [doesn’t say anything]

Dammit, Roarke.

Roarke: But you will remember my warning about taking the law into your own hands, won’t you?

Not quite a “I must warn you”.

I definitely remember seeing the beginning of “The Boss” on TV.

We don’t usually get Tattoo solo shenanigans so early in the episode, so this is nice.

Cindy Carter: Mr. Callas, what are all these things I’m signing?
Howard Callas: Routine, all routine.

This episode is nearly over, and I haven’t made a single GIF. I’m not paying attention to the Dennis Cole fantasy, and “The Boss” wasn’t that interesting either.

Oh, Roarke in disguise. Well, at least we get that.

Eddie Collins: Those dogs. We left a trail from that quicksand. Why aren’t they following us?
Roarke: Because they are my dogs, Mr. Collins.

Okay, so since this was boring, here’s some stuff I’ve been meaning to write about:

I was wondering what the heck they meant by crediting Tama as Lava Lava Boy, so I was googling “Lava Lava” in conjunction with Fantasy Island. I guess all the island girls and boys are called Lava Lava Girls and Boys, but I don’t know that they’ve ever been called that on the show other than in the credits.

There’s a place called Lava Lava Beach Club on Kauai, which is one of the Hawaiian islands. I can’t really tell how long this place has been there, so I don’t know if the Lava Lava People were named after that place or not.

A lavalava is also an article of clothing traditionally worn by Polynesians, and Polynesia includes Hawaii, and Fantasy Island is basically Hawaii, so this is probably the answer. I don’t know that what the Lava Lava Boys and Girls wear are actually lavalavas, but, whatever.

Also, there’s a podcast interview with a Lava Lava Girl that I shall be listening to when I’m done with the series.

  • Tattoo’s shenanigans: He’s become a painter.
  • Costume change: Tattoo wears a red beret and a painter’s smock.
  • Roarke’s drink: clear yellowish
  • Ominous shot of Roarke raising his drink: no (What happened, man? I thought this was gonna be a season 3 thing.)
  • The other side of the island:
    • Roarke: He’s a seaman on a freighter that is due to stop at a small seaport on the other side of the island this afternoon.
  • A legal matter:
    • Roarke: You see, I have no jurisdiction on that section of the coast.
  • Locations:
    • Ships Anchor bar
    • David Ault, Broker in Iron and Metal
  • Someone else had a fantasy:
    • Neil Atwell: I arranged to drop out for a while with Mr. Roarke’s very able help.
  • Roarke in disguise: As a prison guard
  • Leaving with an extra guest: Cindy Carter with new boyfriend Gary Pointer
