3×21 “Jungle Man/Mary Ann and Miss Sophisticate”
- Date Watched: April 18, 2021
- Rating: 3; 4 out of 5
Dennis Cole wants to play the character he used to play in a TV show because he doesn’t know how to do anything else.
Annette Funicello is a ventriloquist who wants to be free of her dummy.
I think Birdman might have ripped off “Jungle Man”. And “Mary Ann and Miss Sophisticate” sounds like 6×11 “Queen of the Soaps”.
Whoa whoa whoa, I don’t think we’ve ever had a shot of the tiki restaurant with Roarke there!
Mary Ann Carlin [to Valerie]: Is that all you ever think about is men? Men and money?
After this line, they cut to Tattoo, who has a great look on his face. Unfortunately, they screwed this shot up and missed most of his reaction, because they immediately panned up to Roarke.
Roarke: You understand, Mr. Farley, your fantasy has been one of the most difficult we’ve ever attempted.
Really? That seems like a pretty simple fantasy; you just need a jungle and some actors.
David Farley: I pick up where I left off?
Tattoo: Not quite. They [the other characters on the show] got a new life of their own since the series ended.
Waah, it’s Hey, Hey It’s The Monkees: “I wonder if the general public knows that TV shows like ours never die, that they just go on and on, even though they’re not being broadcast.”
David Farley: When do I start?
Roarke: Now. Just through that door.
Ah! Two episodes in a row! This time, it’s a different door though, and they’re giving us a beautiful shot of it. This door is located on the fourth wall. And we even get to see a bit of the room on the other side!
Oh my god, they showed us the entire room! They literally did a 360º pan around the whole room! Waaa! It’s just a little room with some plants and paintings and nothing else. When he opens the door back to Roarke’s office, it’s full of fog, and then he’s in the jungle in a loincloth.
The fog is becoming a thing. I feel like I want to concoct some lore around this fog, like the fog is sentient or something, like it’s the smoke monster from Lost.
Roarke: You see, I can only accomplish what you wish by making an ultimate extension of your split personality.
Mary Ann Carlin: What do you mean?
Roarke: I must make the division absolutely complete… by giving life — apparent life — to your other half.
This sounds like that episode of TOS where there was a transporter accident and Kirk was split into Good Kirk and Evil Kirk.
Oh my goddd… Annette Funicello has laser vision.
Wow, and now a shot of Roarke and Tattoo outside the tiki restaurant… except they’re already sitting in the restaurant, so that makes no sense. Sigh.
Valerie is a great villain, probably the best I’ve seen on this show.
I hope Annette dumps her boyfriend, since he had sex with Valerie, but she probably won’t.
I feel like Princess Rima and Haskell and the two out-of-place dudes in business suits gave up really quickly after Jungle Man showed up.
Haha, this contract that Princess Rima is about to sign to give away the natives’ land talks a lot about the Artist and Producer and City of Los Angeles.
Roarke [telepathically]: Fight her, Miss Carlin. Look inside yourself. Find your own dominant strengths and traits.
Has Roarke ever communicated telepathically before? I feel like maybe he did in 3×13 “On the Other Side”, but I’m not sure.
[Mary Ann Carlin, the ventriloquist, has just left for the plane.]
Tattoo [in Roarke’s voice]: Boss, you really did it this time. I love happy endings, and I want to–
Hahah wtf.
Man, season three is just starting to get good, and it’s almost over.
- Locations:
- Fantasy Island Supper Club
- Derek Haskell Trading Center
- Ominous Roarke:
- Roarke: If she should fail, the Valerie part of her personality could become the instrument of her own destruction.
- Roarke’s drink: clearish yellow
- Ominous shot of Roarke drinking: yes
- Surprise guests:
- David Farley: The other characters from my television series, will they be there too?
Roarke: Mara, your wife, yes. Your enemy, Derek Haskell, the white hunter. Prester John, your faithful native friend, and Princess, uh…
Tattoo: Rima.
Roarke: Princess Rima.
- David Farley: The other characters from my television series, will they be there too?
- Magic door:
- David Farley: When do I start?
Roarke: Now. Just through that door.
- David Farley: When do I start?
- Last chance:
- Roarke: First, I must ask you… if you are sure you want to go through with this.
Mary Ann Carlin: Oh yes.
- Roarke: First, I must ask you… if you are sure you want to go through with this.
- Recurring phrases:
- Mary Ann Carlin: But that’s impossible. She’s a wooden dummy!
Roarke: Miss Carlin, this is Fantasy Island. Things are possible here which occur no other place. - Roarke: It is time to go, Mr. Farley. Your fantasy is over.
- Mary Ann Carlin: But that’s impossible. She’s a wooden dummy!
- Hypnosis: Roarke stares down Valerie, the wooden dummy, to bring her to life.
- Disappearing act:
- Roarke: There is Jungle Man’s world. Your world, if you make it yours.
[Farley turns to look at the world.]
David Farley: You know, Mr. Roarke, I’m beginning to see what you mean. I’ll find a way —
[Farley turns back to Roarke. Roarke is gone.]
- Roarke: There is Jungle Man’s world. Your world, if you make it yours.
- He’s dead, Jim: Mary Ann Carlin chokes Valerie until she turns back into a wooden dummy, then places her body in a very convenient fire pit.
- Not leaving on the plane:
- David Farley: Mr. Roarke, I just can’t leave. Mara’s my wife, and I love her. These are my people. If I go with you, I go back to being a pathetic, obsolete human being. That would kill me.
Roarke: I see. Well, it’s a highly unusual request, but if you wish to stay here, it can be done. You realize of course that such a decision is irrevocable. - Valerie, ’cause she’s dead
- David Farley: Mr. Roarke, I just can’t leave. Mara’s my wife, and I love her. These are my people. If I go with you, I go back to being a pathetic, obsolete human being. That would kill me.
