4×09 “My Late Lover/Sanctuary”

  • Rating: 3 out of 5

Eva Gabor wants to choose between three suitors… with a little help from her dead husband.
Bobby Sherman wants to find out who poisoned him.

Eva Gabor is rich, and she has three suitors… isn’t this exactly what happened in 2×13 “The Lady and the Longhorn”?

They were doing so well with the ominous introductions by Roarke, but that doesn’t seem to be a thing lately.

Roarke: Now you say “guy”… have the police determined that it was indeed a man?

“Could it have been a woman?”
“Yes, that is another possibility.”

Anastasia Dexter: My three admirable suitors. Shall I tell you about them?
Roarke: If I may, Mrs. Dexter, allow me to tell you.

I definitely saw this episode before, because I remember this exchange and how ridiculous it was that this happens.

Anastasia Dexter [on the phone]: Hello. This is Mrs. Dexter. I’m staying in the Lanai Bungalow.

Show (the sign), don’t tell!

Also, “lanai” — I think that’s the word Roarke uses to describe his patio later; I can never remember what he called it.

Thomas Henshaw: You know how it is in a foreign country; all the doors look alike.

Anastasia Dexter: This is impossible.
Arlen Dexter: Not on Fantasy Island.

Come on, like we’re not gonna know who that is.

This makes no sense — there’s a girl, Tessa, and she’s staying in this Sanctuary place. The big bad’s henchman said he found her in Des Moines feeding pigeons, and he brought her there to be a “hostess” (ie. prostitute). She doesn’t dig that, so she tries to commit suicide by taking a bunch of pills, but Bobby Sherman stops her. Then Roarke shows up and reveals that she was another guest with a fantasy.

So surely she knew that Roarke was going to come back and get her on Monday, so why would she commit suicide? And how did the henchman find her in Des Moines if she’s actually a Fantasy Island guest?

Roarke: You’re a very courageous man, Mr. Henshaw. Who knows, perhaps your courage itself will produce… a miracle.

Yeah, ~courage~ is gonna cure him from being poisoned.

I should be keeping track of how often the Magic Object is destroyed/lost; it’s happened in the last three episodes now. In 4×7 “Snowbird”, he dropped the powder just as he was about to do the big stunt. In 4×8 “Three Feathers”, he lost the pendant in the water before he was able to use it to convince the last guy of his innocence. And now, Bobby Sherman has dropped the potion that was keeping him alive.

Roarke: There was a storm at the higher elevations last night.

I thought it doesn’t rain on Fantasy Island?

Bobby Sherman does a DNA analysis to find his killer:

I don’t pay too much attention to the drivers at the end, but Tama drove both guests this time. I feel like they’re usually careful not to do that.

Ah! That must have happened because Walter arrived in a separate car, and Wally was driving that car.

  • Guests:
    • Mr. Thomas Henshaw, a bookkeeper with an aerospace firm in Sunnyvale, California

  • Ominous Roarke:
    • Tattoo: Boss, that’s where all the big-time killers hide out. Why does he want to go there?
Roarke: To hunt down a killer.
      Tattoo: Whose?
      Roarke: His own…
  • Tattoo has no faith:
    • Tattoo: Can we help her to do that, boss?
  • Roarke’s drink: same old
  • Ominous shot of Roarke raising his glass: nah, he’s not very ominous
  • Magic object:
    • Roarke: This potion, found exclusively on Fantasy Island, will, as I promised you, extend your life for 48 hours. However, to maintain its potency, you must sip it at least every three hours.

    • Fantasy Island Hospital (mentioned but not seen)

  • Cancel the fantasy:
    • Roarke: Unfortunately, once a fantasy has begun, it must be played out to its conclusion.
  • Roarke saves the day: Falco threatens to kill Tessa Brody, and then Roarke arrives with guys with guns.
  • A legal matter:
    • Thomas Henshaw: I thought you said this island was owned by an unfriendly nation.
Roarke: And so it is, but I have an influential friend very high in our government. I thought this a most opportune moment for him to use that influence, and he did.
  • Leaving with an extra guest:
    • Thomas Henshaw with new girlfriend Tessa Brody
    • Anastasia Dexter with new fiance Walter Blair
