4×20 “Delphine/The Unkillable”

  • Rating: 3 out of 5

Roarke’s goddaughter wants to marry Darrin Stephens her fiancĂ© and live like a normal mortal.
Annette Funicello and her boyfriend want to prove there were silicon-based lifeforms on Earth before humans.

Roarke: We will need your birth certificate, of course, and certain other documents…

Roarke looks around the room suspiciously when he says this, but nothing comes of it.

Roarke: Must I remind you that you are not an ordinary mortal. You have inherited certain powers…

I don’t know if I want to hear this; I feel like this is gonna be like “The Leap Back”.

Roarke: …known as the gift of the McNabs.

Oh, okay. This episode is not going to tell us anything about Roarke, just about her family. Okay. Phew. But also… damn.

Delphine: All I want is to be a normal, happy wife.

Roarke: Remember, a true, deep love can often achieve more than strength. Now, I will do all I can to help you, of course, but in the final analysis…

“Love is power”?

Ohhh my god. While looking for that picture, I came across this:

Which sure looks a lot like the contract from 3×21 “Jungle Man”:

I would not be happy if my uncle was stroking my chin like that.

Paul Todd: My theory, based on many years of personal research, is that somewhere in the Earth’s early development, there had to be a lifeform structured on an element other than carbon. […] The most abundant element in the Earth’s crust, next to oxygen: silicon.

Elizabeth Drake: Mathematically, there had to be that moment in the Earth’s history in some semi-molten stage when conditions were perfect for the emergence of organisms based on silicon.

Mkay.

Oh no, another map.

Hubble Benson doesn’t age apparently.

They’re not showing us the full map, but they’re carrying it around a lot, so they’re showing us lots of little glimpses. I think the map in the closeup is not the same map they use as a prop, or possibly, there are two volcanos. In the prop map, there’s an area that seems to be marked “unexplored region”.

Convenient bananas. I wonder what ever happened to Chester.

What is the deal with Hubble Benson’s character? They play this silly villainous music every time he shows up.

Don’t make me start counting forced kisses; this seems to happen every episode now.

This is such a Monkees fantasy; Carl Ballantine and Vic Tayback and things going poof.

Are you serious? This looks like a ’50s monster.

I really hope he takes off his mask and it’s Roarke.

Paul Todd: That thing is elemental; it’s unkillable.

Wat.

What a lame wedding dress and venue. Roarke went all out for the wedding in 4×15 “Something Borrowed”, but not for his goddaughter.

Roarke: Now, without those powers, you were forced to conjure up a somewhat spectacular — if routine — illusion.

That was kind of an underwhelming episode.

  • Guests:
    • Dr. Paul Todd, a paleontologist from an eastern university, with his assistant, Miss Elizabeth Drake
    • Miss Delphine McNab, assistant to the Great Zachariah, with Mr. Greg Randolph, a hotel executive
  • Ominous Roarke:
    • Roarke: What he’s looking for is even more strange and mysterious than that, Tattoo. Also… considerably more dangerous…
  • Recurring phrases:
    • Tattoo: Once, I saw him make an elephant disappear.
      Roarke: Indeed, Tattoo.
    • Elizabeth Drake: There are bands with pure silica in them?
      Roarke: Oh, indeed.
  • Friend of Roarke:
    • Roarke: A descendant of one of our oldest families, Tattoo. Her parents were dear friends of mine.
  • Roarke’s drink: same old
  • Ominous shot of Roarke drinking: no, he winks at Delphine instead
  • A legal matter:
    • Delphine: Uncle, I want you to marry us.
Roarke: As chief magistrate of the island, I do, of course, have that authority.
  • Can’t help you:
    • Delphine: You have to help me get rid of the gift.
Roarke: I’m afraid that’s not possible.
  • Warning:
    • Roarke: Also, I must point out to you that the natives say the volcano is haunted.
  • All you need is love:
    • Roarke: Remember, a true, deep love can often achieve more than strength.
  • Roarke’s powers: He could tell the Great Zachariah was approaching through his patio without turning around to see him.
  • Surprise guests: Dr. Kyle Mason, Paul Todd’s colleague
  • Locations:
    • Cluny’s Curios
    • Roarke: That mineral specimen you showed me just now, Miss Drake, is identical to rocks found at the northern tip of this island, where you and Dr. Todd will be going.
