4×18 “The Searcher/The Way We Weren’t”

  • Rating: 3 out of 5

A woman wants to find out who her father is, but her new husband, James Darren, doesn’t want her to.
Laraine Stephens and her husband want to re-live the early days of their marriage.

This is a James Darren episode, so I’ve already seen it at least twice. This time will be my first time I’m watching it as a Fantasy Island fan rather than a James Darren fan though.

I don’t actually remember what this was about, except I know James Darren is a bad guy.

Okay, what is going on. Roarke is explaining the fantasies to Tattoo, but Roarke is already holding his drink?! We didn’t see the girl give it to him?

Roarke: Your favour is granted, Mrs. Holmes. And when the time is right, I promise, you will know the truth.
Karen Saunders-Holmes: Thank you.
[She kisses Roarke and leaves.]

I guess it’s good we’ve got a woman initiating the unprovoked kissing for once, but still. Is this just what the eighties were like?

I think this is the first time we’ve seen a bit of that hidden side wall to the left of the tapestry. Not much, but at least we know it’s there.

Brian Holmes: She wants to be with him? So I’ll reunite them both… in death.

Dun dun dun.

Dottie is in the kitchen, being harassed by Vic (her neighbour… not Fontaine). Vic leaves, and her husband comes in asking if the pie is ready. She holds the pie up to his face to let him smell it… and then she lets it drop onto the floor. I thought they were definitely going for the pie-in-the-face bit. I wonder why they didn’t.

Laurette Spang reminds me of Phyllis Davis. I wonder if the part was written with her in mind.

Dottie Cooper: If I allow him to make love to me, you get the job.
Fred Cooper: Well… well, Vic’s always kidding. You can’t take him seriously.

What a great husband that Fred is.

Maybe it’s because I’ve already seen it twice already, but there wasn’t really much to write about this episode.

  • Guests:
    • The former Miss Karen Saunders of Cheverly, Maryland, and her brand new husband, Mr. Brian Holmes.
    • Mr. and Mrs. Fred Cooper.
  • Ominous Roarke:
    • Roarke: His fantasy is to recapture the magic of the early days of their marriage. Mr. Cooper is confident that recreating the way they were will also rekindle the unquenchable passion they once knew. However, I have my doubts, Tattoo. I’m afraid the Coopers may be in for some nasty surprises…
  • What you really, really want:
    • Karen Saunders-Holmes: I never told Brian the real reason why I insisted on coming to Fantasy Island for our honeymoon.
  • Recurring phrases:
    • Fred Cooper: Oh, Mr. Roarke, this is great, but when does my fantasy start?
    • [Mid-episode:]
Roarke: Mr. Noah Janssen? Welcome to Fantasy Island.
    • Roarke: Whether she is indeed to learn that truth, well, that’s entirely up to you.

    • Dottie Cooper: Watch out, Mr. Roarke, we’re going into a fog bank!
