4×21 “Basin Street/The Devil’s Triangle”

  • Date Watched: June 5, 2021

Cleavon Little wants to meet his jazz idol.
Joe Namath is an adventure TV show presenter, and he and his crew want to solve the mystery of what happened to a lost pilot.

Voyager had Amelia Earhart on their show. Why can’t they just say she wants to solve the mystery of what happened to Amelia Earhart, rather than inventing another missing female pilot?

Roarke: However, I remind all of you…

Should I have been tracking Roarke’s reminders? Has he officially switched from warnings to reminders?

Roarke: …that in recreating the exact meteorological conditions that existed fifty years ago when Miss Dietrich disappeared, I have also had to recreate whatever unknown phenomena existed at that time.

How can you re-create something if you don’t know what it is.

Roarke: Then you have only to get into the rover, follow that trail over there, and your fate will be in your own hands.

I feel like they have called it a jeep before. Do they have different kinds of cars? I just assumed they were all the same car.

Roarke: I’m sure we can do something about that. After all…
Me: This is Fantasy Island.
Roarke: …this is your fantasy, Mr. Raines.

Boo.

I saw some of the beginning of this episode last year, but I had to watch it on mute, because my dog started howling along with the horns.

Kerry Dawson: Someone help me! Please, please!

Someone? You’re on a deserted island. There are only two other people on the island, and you know both their names.

So this TV crew has crashed on a deserted island. One of them was attacked by a deadly snake, and now they’ve found the missing plane… and no one is filming anything. That was the whole point of them coming here.

Roarke: This young lady wanted to trace her roots to New Orleans, where her great-grandmother, a certain Miss Billie Joe, inspired by the concern of a mysterious gentleman who appeared briefly in her life, rehabilitated herself and lived to be a happy, fulfilled and charming old lady.

I don’t remember exactly, but I think something the guest did in 4×5 “Pleasure Palace” also had an effect on the past. So apparently Fantasy Island uses whatever model of time travel that is. Although, I’m fairly certain they’ve used different models before. Like 3×22 “My Fair Pharaoh”, I don’t think we’re meant to believe Cleopatra was briefly replaced by Joan Collins in real life.

I’m looking forward to being done with season 4 soon, because these episodes have been boring lately.

  • Guests:
    • Clay Garrett, the star of True World Adventure; Miss Kerry Dawson, his researcher and scriptwriter; and Mr. Tom Spencer, Mr. Garrett’s partner
    • Mr. Charles Raines, a mailman from Templeton, California

    • Charles Raines: Cornet? I don’t play horn.
Roarke: Try it. Just a few notes.
  • Magic door:
    • Roarke: Now, if you’ll come this way, Mr. Raines.
  • Magic fog: The magic room is filled with magic fog.
  • Time travel: Charles Raines travels to New Orleans in the past, sometime in the late 1800s or early 1900s.
  • Locations: Mama Parker’s Parlor House
  • Disappearing act:
    • Charles Raines: Please, Mr. Roarke! Mr. Roarke…
  • Recurring phrases:
    • Roarke: Your fantasy is over, Mr. Raines.
  • Can’t help you:
    • Charles Raines: Mr. Roarke, let me take Billie Joe back with me.
Roarke: That, I’m afraid, is not possible. She must remain here in her own timeframe. I’m sorry.
  • Someone else had a fantasy:
    • Roarke: Oh, that reminds me. You will have a companion on the flight home. A lovely young lady who had her own fantasy. You see, sometimes, we are able to combine two fantasies, as in this case; it makes it more rewarding. Well, this young lady wanted to trace her roots to New Orleans, where her great-grandmother, a certain Miss Billie Joe, inspired by the concern of a mysterious gentleman who appeared briefly in her life, rehabilitated herself and lived to be a happy, fulfilled and charming old lady.
  • Leaving with an extra guest: Charles Raines with Billie Joe’s great-granddaughter
